Oregon approved to issue an additional $46 million in Pandemic EBT food assistance to 80,000 young children

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) received approval from the federal government to provide additional food benefits for young children whose families received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits between September 2021 and May 2022. These additional food benefits will provide approximately $46 million in additional food assistance for 80,000 young children in Oregon. The additional food benefits will be issued to families’ existing EBT cards in Fall 2022, with the exact dates yet to be determined.

Early Childhood Suspension and Expulsion Prevention Program

The Early Learning Division is developing a new Early Childhood Suspension and Expulsion Prevention Program (Program), as called for by House Bill 2166. September 1, 2022, the proposed rule language for the Program was posted for public comment. It is scheduled for review and adoption by the Early Learning Council at their meeting on Wednesday, September 28.

First pediatric monkeypox (hMPXV) case identified in Oregon

Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is confirming the state’s first pediatric case of monkeypox virus (hMPXV). OHA and county public health officials say the case is linked to an adult monkeypox infection that was confirmed last month. “We have a known connection to a previously diagnosed case,” said Dean Sidelinger, M.D., health officer and state epidemiologist at OHA. “This child did not get the virus at school, child care or another community setting.”

Our Children Oregon released the 29th annual Oregon KIDS COUNT Data Cards featuring state and county-level data, complementing the simultaneous release of the 2022 KIDS COUNT Data Book, a 50-state report on how children and families are faring. Both these resources shed light on the health, economic, education, community, and environmental challenges impacting children in Oregon.
